We’ve just finished restoring this QRX-999 (Sansui’s European version of the QRX-9001) and have got it sounding and looking great. The wood cabinet is almost flawless, and the face plate has no scratches- it even has the original plastic tag on the Dolby switch. We did all of our usual modifications and upgrades, like Mylar caps and the diff mod, and are really happy with how it turned out.

This 9001 appears to be one of the least used we have ever seen. It appears that it was bought and used very little. It sat for a long time before we got it, but it was inside, in a closet, for years. This is from one of the later production runs, as it has the gold anodized chassis.
We have done everything to it that we do to these 9001’s. It has Differential Current Balance on all four channels, the regulator added to the quad board power supply, and Holy Grail quad alignment, but it does not have the LED front panel. The lighting here is all original, and from the looks of the bulbs, in very good condition. When the bulbs in these units have a lot of hours, they turn black looking. These bulbs are completely clear, like when new.
If the buyer wants us to add the LED front panel lighting, we will be glad to do so for an extra $35. My thought with this one is that someone may want to have an absolutely original QRX9001 to show off. Really, almost in showroom floor condition.
Of course we have completely recapped it, rebuilt the output driver boards with many new parts (28 new parts per board) and have aligned everything, the FM, bias and offset settings, everything. This is probably as close as you can get to being able to purchase a 9001 as it was originally in 1976.
Sansui 9090 $1225 – sold
Another 9090 that we have completely restored, recapped, and added our Differential Current Balance modification. When we got it, one of the channels had the outputs blown, so we replaced all 8 output transistors for both channels.
It is indeed in excellent condition.
The output driver board has had all fusible resistors replaced, the differential pair in each channel replaced, and of course the already mention Differential Current Balance mod.

The 9090, especially the way we restore it, is just about the best stereo receiver made in Japan during the Golden Age of Stereo, the 1970’s.
Sansui Eight $850 – sold
This is about the nicest condition Eight we have ever seen. It belongs to the gentleman who owned the QRX999 with QBL down the page here. He has asked us to sell it for him.
The wood cabinet, front panel, everything about it is near perfect.
We have done everything that we can to this unit. I has been completely recapped, the driver boards rebuilt, and our Differential Current Balance mod added.
Since we published the proper method for adjusting the Eight driver boards on Audiokarma, we have been getting a lot of these in for restoration. Properly adjusted with our diff mod added, the amplifier in these is about as musical sounding as any amplifier made by Sansui.
The amplifier is the same design as in the AU999, which makes sense, as they were the top of the line models during the same period of time.
The story behind the Eight is a very interesting one. The Eight is the legendary top of the line unit that Sansui made back in 1969. Before that Sansui had the 5000 as its top of the line, and there had been a problem with those models.
Seems they got a batch of bad resistors that went on the amplifier boards in the 5000. Sansui designs their amp boards with something called fusible resistors. They act as resistors, but if something goes wrong, as can happen with amplifiers, they are supposed to quickly burn out, acting as a fuse.
Well, somehow this batch of resistors would burn out like they were supposed to, only, they would burst into flames while doing it, make a lot of smoke and an ugly blackened area on the board.
Having an amplifier that bursts into flames, even if it’s just a small fire totally contained on the board, was very embarrassing for Sansui. There was a lot of “making fun of” in the Japanese electronics press, and Sansui felt very motivated to save face.
They put on their best engineering determined look, and designed the Eight. It was going to be the best Receiver ever, and a big leap forward for Sansui. In reality it turned out to be a good thing, as the Eight was a big leap forward for Sansui, and the rest of the industry, who had to keep up. Sansui sold a lot of Eights. Even the name was innovative.
It’s way over designed, and if you open it up to work on it, you see engineering innovations you don’t see anywhere else, ever, both mechanically, and in circuit design. Many of these design features were then incorporated in later gear, not just by Sansui, but the whole industry.
One of the things about the amplifier section that was totally new, and never done since, was this: Sansui made some of the amplifier parameters adjustable. Dialing in these parameters to the absolute right setting allowed the amp to perform at its lowest distortion point, and best slew rate. Normally, off the production line, things vary a bit. These adjustments made every amp the same. It did make a difference in sound quality, but…
They didn’t describe how to set these adjustments very well, at least in the English version of the Service Manual. Techs have been scratching their heads over this for years, and a lot of amps, once serviced, were out of adjustment simply because no one knew how to set them.

This Eight does not have the protection relay, but does have fuses on the outputs. Fuses are the most reliable speaker protection there is, as they always work. This is more than adequate to protect the outputs and driver section.
Sansui QRX999 with QBL Mod and remote $2925- sold
This was the first of several we restored for him, very recently, and he’s now asking us to sell it. This is just about the finest QRX999 to go through our shop. The QBL mod has been added, and a very nice condition (new and unused in box) QBL. It has virtually every upgrade that we do.

A 25v regulator was added to the quad processing board supply, for safety, in case of AC line problems.
All fusible resistors have been replaced.
The amp driver boards have received our total rework, where we change over 34 parts on each board.
Our proprietary Differential Current Balance modification was done to the amp driver boards. This modification increases sonic detail, imaging, and musicality, without affecting the Sansui tube like sound character.

All controls were cleaned and lubed with Corrosion X, a treatment which lasts 7-10 years, much longer than the usual De Oxit. De-oxit will usually require another treatment in 1-2 years.
And of course this QRX has our QBL modification, which allows channel levels to be completely controlled by the very substantial QBL, which was originally designed for the QRX5500/7500. It is on a 16′ cable, and allows one to sit in a favorite listening position and control the quad balance to all speakers in real time.

We haven’t had one of these for sale here before, but we have restored quite a few of them. this one has quite a story attached to it. It’s been sitting in the shop in its unrestored state for some time.

Notice the gear driven flywheel, to increase the flywheel feeling of the tuning knob, another first.
This Eight has had a complete recap, a lot of other changed parts, and new output transistors on both channels. One channel was bad, so we just changed them both. Also a thorough alignment and setting of all those adjustments. The Eight has a really sweet sound to it, and about the best low end of any of the early Sansui receivers. It kicks.

Sansui QRX999 $2475–sold
Here’s another one of these European beauties. We see just a few of these through the shop in a year, so they are pretty rare.
This one of course has had all the work done to it that we do with the 9001 series. I’ll put a list of everything done a little further down.
This is really nice one, almost perfect front panel, a very good cabinet (refinished of course), and that wonderful quad performance that we love so much. It also has our Differential Current Balance mod, and the Holy Grail quad alignment mod.
We already have two customers interested in this unit, so it will probably go very quickly. We don’t have another 9001 series unit in the For Sale queue, it’s getting harder and harder for us to find them. I suppose eventually they will get scarce, and then we’ll all be happy to have one.

Sansui 2000 Receiver $475
Excellent condition Sansui 2000
Here is a completely restored by us receiver, from the early 70’s. These units are actually quite sought after and have a really nice sound, with the early Sansui design amplifiers. The FM is before all the decoding steps had been turned over to IC’s and so the FM is quite good, quite musical.
The amplifiers in this are of the capacitive output type. Sansui perfected this design and brought it to the highest level of performance of any manufacture. The output capacitors were large for the time, 1500uf, but we increase them to 10,000uf, which is a big improvement.
Justin originally built this for his own use, but then happened upon a 9090, which he rebuilt and is now in his living room.

Fisher X202-C $1225 – sold
I restored this a couple years ago and used it some in a home theatre setup. It didn’t quite have enough power with the inefficient speakers I was using, so it sat for while. It’s a very nice piece of Fisher gear.
The last of the Fisher integrateds. Great sound, 35 wpc, very flexible with lots of inputs. That Fisher sound in spades.
Originally it didn’t have a cabinet and I eventually found one in so-so condition on ebay. Think of buying it as with no cabinet but a fair one thrown in as a bonus. I actually like the way it looks in this rustic old cabinet. With the almost perfect front panel, it has an authentic look about it. The top metal screen insert is missing.
It has a new matched quad set of EH 7591’s. These tubes require a little less grid voltage, so the grid resistors have have been changed accordingly. I also added 10 ohm, 1% resistors between the cathodes and ground, which makes setting bias extremely easy and accurate, with a voltmeter. The resistors also act as fuses if something should go wrong, preventing the 7591’s from going to a red plate condition and destroying themselves.
There are 2 potentiometers for bias and 2 for bias balance. The bias is set a little less than factory spec at 19ma, things run a little cooler that way, with very little degradation in audio quality.
The knobs have brass tops and be kept shiny with a little brass polish applied from time to time. The bezel around the front panel responds the same way. Simple and elegant styling, a trait of the Fisher mark.
A thermistor, or inrush current limiter, has been added on the AC line, which acts to improve tube heater life to almost infinite, or so I have been told. It makes sense, as the heater gets to warm up slowly, over a few seconds time, thus not experiencing thermal shock.
In all a very nice sounding Fisher integrated, the last of the line. It has that clear, shimmering tube sound with excellent detail, imaging, and complete lack of listening fatigue. If this is what you want, you won’t go wrong with this little amp.
Original power supply can capacitors are still in place, giving a very original look. Replacements were added under the chassis, there was plenty of room.

QRX9001 $1875 — Sold
Another very excellent 9001 that we just restored in our shop. It has everything that we normally do to these units, including the Differential Current Balance modification. This one has really nice wood grain in the cabinet and, of course, has been refinished at Gabe’s shop.

Sansui QRX999, $2175 –sold
Here is another QRX999 in excellent condition. The QRX999 is identical to the 9001 except for the color of the front panel and some of the knobs. This unit is from Arizona, and so has almost no internal corrosion. It has all the upgrades and improvements we do to all of these units, and looks very nice with its refinished cabinet.
The 10,000uf power supply caps have been changed for 15,000uf, for a total of 60,000uf! It tightens up the bass a little.
The left edge of the front panel has two scratches, that are very hard to see and photograph. Consequently we are charging less than we normally do for a QRX999. You have to look hard to see the scratches, but they are there.
This QRX999 has had all our work done to it. Complete recap/restore, complete rebuild of the power output boards, 25v regulator added, blend resistors removed from quad boards and Holy Grail alignment, everything set to factory specs, our Differential Current Balance modification, and all the testing we normally do to these things. Plus, of course, a cabinet refinish.

For Sale 9090db in Very Good condition $1125 –sold
Here’s a 9090db that we have completely restored. Looks very nice indeed. The 9090db produces very high power, and can easily overpower some lower rated speakers. It can also fill a room with high level audio if that is what you desire.
We have had the cabinet refinished, and overall it looks very good.

This 9090db has, of course, had everything we do to them- done. It has a complete recap, a complete rebuild of the power amp boards, and this one has all new output transistors. Most 9090 units have had one or more output devices changed during their lifetime. This one had several replaced. Everything was working ok, but we could tell that the Tr’s had not been replaced in matched pairs, and so we put in 8 new ones, 4 matched pairs. Otherwise, it would not hold up the way it should to high power operation.
The dolby section has been bypassed, with the tape ins and outs brought back into the circuitry so you can use them as inputs. It also has our Differential Current Balance modification, for that extra sweet and musical sound.
For Sale, QRX8001 in Excellent condition $1675 –sold
This unit belongs to a long time client of ours in Hawaii. It is a QRX8001, which for those who don’t know is pretty much the same as the 9001 except for a couple points. It does not have the dolby circuitry, which is a blessing. It also has less power out than the 9001 (1.5 db less), about 38 watts per channel instead of 65. Otherwise it has every other feature and circuit and processing type that the 9001 has.
This particular unit also comes with our QBL modification, and a very nice QBL unit. You have to use one of these to appreciate it. They make quad so much fun! I don’t know what kind of music you may prefer, but I got so picky over the years, that for non-encoded music, using the synthesizer mode, I would adjust the front and rear balance for almost every song. With the QBL you can do that in about a second, and you don’t have to get up.
This one has a few dings on the cabinet, but could easily be refinished. Photos always make the wood cabinets look worse than they do in person.

This unit can present a stunning sound field, with more of the live feeling of being there, than practically any other system. A modern day top of the line, $25,000 system cannot match one of these with a set of good speakers and source gear. Our customers repeatedly tell us of comparisons done by friends who might have such a system. This unit was the pinnacle of the whole Quad revolution in the 70’s which unfortunately died an untimely death, due to corporate rivalries. The QRX999 is the European version of the 9001, and is very sought after here in the USA.

Here’s another one we just put through our shop. This one has the gold anodized chassis, and the “if it don’t work, turn the dolby off” tag on the dolby switch. It’s funny how people always ask about that tag. If a unit comes in with it, we keep it with that unit.

The big smoothing power supply caps have been replace with switching power supply types of 15,000uf each. These are much heavier duty and rated for 50% more hours of usage than the originals. You’ll notice that we have now found a source for the right size clamps for these caps. I gave up looking long ago, but just happened upon a site in Canada that sells them. Looks much nicer in my opinion.
A 25v regulator has been added to the power supply to protect the quad boards.
The blend resistors have been removed from the quad boards and the Holy Grail Alignment done.
All fusible resistors have been changed out for new metal film types.
The output driver boards have been completely reworked, all fusible resistors changed for metal film types, selected transistors changed out and our Diff Mod added. In all, we replace 32 parts on each output driver board. It is a decided upgrade, with most people noticing the difference immediately. It’s more detailed and more musical sounding.
All pots and switches have been thoroughly cleaned and lubed.
All settings, dolby, offset, bias, etc. have been recalibrated.

We get calls from people wondering why we do not have more 9001 models up for sale on this page. Sorry to say, but the demand has gotten to the point that when we acquire and then completely restore a 9001 for sale, it hardly ever makes it here, to this page. People contact us and those units are sold before we finish them. If you are interested in one of these, please contact us.
People also ask where we get these units that we sell here. Usually they come from customers who send us a 9001 for restoration. It is quite common for people to own more than one of these, as many as 3-4 is not unusual. Once they get one restored, and they find out how reliable it is, one of their back up units often gets sold to us. That’s why these units are in such good condition, they come from collectors.
Occasionally, someone will just contact us with one they got at a 2nd hand store, or similar. We just got one in recently where a teenager bought one from a local thrift store, and when he found out the cost to get it working, he sold it to us. It’s rare. And it was in incredible condition. We all should be so lucky as to find one of these at a thrift store for $25-50. And yes, we gave him a fair price, and… he was quite happy with his $300 profit (700% markup) on the deal.
QRX 9001 Ser #236100112 Excellent condition $1775
We haven’t had a 9001 for sale here for quite some time. This one is in very excellent condition. The front panel is almost perfect, with a couple of the knobs having slight blems on the knurling. The cabinet is at Gabe’s shop, getting refinished. As soon as we get it back we will take additional pictures and put them up.
It has some slight discoloration on parts of the chassis from corrosion, you have to look to see it, though. The output transistors are original, and this unit looks to be very low hours since new. We can tell by the condition of the front panel lamps, which were still nice and clear on this one.
Of course, we’ve done all our work on it. It has–
Complete recap with signal path caps replaced with Nichicon UKW and others replaced with various brands.
The big smoothing power supply caps have been replace with switching power supply types of 15,000uf each. These are much heavier duty and rated for 50% more hours of usage than the originals. You’ll notice that we have now found a source for the right size clamps for these caps. I gave up looking long ago, but just happened upon a site in Canada that sells them. Looks much nicer in my opinion.
A 25v regulator has been added to the power supply to protect the quad boards.
The blend resistors have been removed from the quad boards and the Holy Grail Alignment done.
All fusible resistors have been changed out for new metal film types.
The output driver boards have been completely reworked, all fusible resistors changed for metal film types, selected transistors changed out and our Diff Mod added. In all, we replace 32 parts on each output driver board. It is a decided upgrade, with most people noticing the difference immediately. It’s more detailed and more musical sounding.
All pots and switches have been thoroughly cleaned and lubed.
All settings, dolby, offset, bias, etc. have been recalibrated.
FM tuner has been aligned
We have added LEDs to the tuning dial illumination, which is hard to capture in a photo
When we get the cabinet back from the refinish shop, we will put up some more and better pictures.
QRX9001 Ser #236110621 Excellent condition $1775 –Sold
This is another 9001 that has received our complete Recap and Restore, with the Diff Mod, LED front panel, and cabinet refinish from Gabe’s shop. It is excellent in every way, and is one of the nicer ones to go through our shop.

Damaged QRX8001 Ser #236110153 damaged in shipping $1075 — Sold
Update: We have gone ahead and refinished this cabinet. The pictures now show it with the cabinet refinished by Gabe.
If you follow our shop action page you will remember that a QRX8001 was damaged by UPS in shipping about 6 months ago. The box was dropped on the rear left corner, severely caving in the rear panel. Somehow, the wood cabinet was not damaged at all. We have finally gotten the unit back, on an insurance settlement. We have straightened the rear panel. . . . as best we can. If you look at it carefully, it is very obvious that it has been bent. There were a couple problems inside that we also repaired. It is now in perfect operating condition, and from every view except the rear is in excellent shape. The only blemish is a small scratch between the speaker selector knob and the power switch. It doesn’t show up well in a picture.
As far as the electronics are concerned it has the normal $1425 worth of work that we do on it, a complete recap/restore and all the mods.

Big smoothing caps are replaced with 18,000uf switching power supply units, giving a total of 36,000uf, almost as much as the 9001 (40,000). Stock is two 15,000uf caps.
A 25v regulator has been added to protect the fragile quad boards.
The troublesome 4 ch board (double sided) has been pinned and soldered.
Blend resistors have been removed from the quad boards, and the Holy Grail alignment done.
The output boards have the Diff Mod, along with all fusible resistors replaced with metal film types, and a careful balance of differential currents. Also a slight reduction in gain, which lowers the noise floor and reduces distortion.
All adjustments carefully set, bias, offset, quad, etc.
The front panel has green LED lighting, giving it “That Look” that everyone seems to like so much.
Aside from the bent rear panel, we will warrant this just like we do all our other restored units, 90 days- you pay shipping to us- we pay return shipping.
Really, once you install this unit on a shelf, you will forget about the rear panel. Here’s a couple pictures of the damage after we straightened it.

This is a good opportunity to experience the full on QRX quad sound for considerably less dollars. The 8001 has a little less power, about 1.5 db less, which, honestly is hardly noticeable. And no dolby (a huge loss, LOL). And of course it goes into 2X power stereo mode if you want that 200 watt per channel amp feeling!
QRX9001 Ser #236110003 $1800 -sold
This is a very nice example of the 9001. It has very little corrosion on the chassis and the front panel is near perfect and cabinet is very nice. This is a very low hour unit, with all original bulbs that have not darkened at all. This unit came in with offsets and bias almost dead on spec, which is very unusual. We can usually tell from marks on the case, screws and washers, and this one appears to have never been worked on.

The cabinet has not been refinished. It is original and has a couple marks on it, but is in good shape. The round circle on the left side appears to be a foot mark from something sitting on top of it. All in all, an excellent unit with sound to match.
We’ve been asked quite a few times why we never have any amps up for sale. We’ve had about 5 different AU amps in the shop that were planned for restoration and sale. Justin finally just took the bull by the horns and started on a couple of them, both AU999’s
Here’s the first one, Ser. #231040653 AU999 $475 -sold
This AU999 is in excellent condition, no scratches or indents anywhere. There are a couple nicks on the front panel edges, but they are two small to be seen in a photo. You can feel them though.
We have done the following to this unit:
Changed out all the electrolytic capacitors, Nichicon UKW in the signal path, various others for power supply functions.
Doubled the size of the big smoothing caps, from 4700ufd each to 10,000ufd each. To accomodate this, and not blow the bridge rectifier at startup, the bridge rectifier has been changed to a 35amp 400v unit. Completely overkill, but will never cause a problem. A lot of people increase the size of these caps in the early AU amps, but if the rectifier is not changed, trouble comes later.
The output amplifier stage has gotten our Diff Mod, for some reason making a huge change in the sound of this unit. Not that it wasn’t good before, it is just utterly transparent after the mod.
We have chosen to leave in the “flying saucer” transistors that are in this unit. A lot of rebuilders will change them out as a matter of course. They all seem to be in excellent shape, and the sound was just so good, I didn’t want to mess with it. This unit has a slightly warmer sound than the AU9500, or you could say, the 9500 is slightly more neutral. I actually prefer the sound of this 999 over the 9500, but the 9500 does have almost twice as much power.
My other impression of this amp is that it has a fantastic low end. It sounds like a big 250wpc dc amp, up to the limits of its power capability. It does have plenty, at least enough for me, and will drive my test speakers, a pair of B&W 802-S2 speakers to almost painful levels. It basically has the same power capability as the 9001.
